Dear Friends:
As we pass the 100-day mark of the disastrous Trump administration, push back is being seen across the country and even the world. I recommend this podcast with New York Times chief political analyst Nate Cohn “Americans to Trump: You’ve Gone Too Far” for perspective on how Trump’s election in America differs from elections of other modern autocrats who were very popular when elected.
Trump won the last election, but just barely and his approval has been sinking rapidly since he took office. But we cannot be complacent. We are still a democracy and one with increasing numbers of angry and engaged citizens as Trump continues his efforts to destroy our government, institutions, national security and national economy. We who are resisting can and are making a difference.

Our friends in Canada have just elected Mark Carney, the liberal candidate in an election that seemed a shoe-in for the conservatives only a couple months ago. [His] campaign [was] overshadowed by relentless provocations and steep trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Thus, Trump has clarified for our friends to the north as he has for Americans and the world how important it is to stand up to his bullying, and insist on the rule of law.

Traditionally, May Day, May 1, is a day of solidarity with unions, workers and immigrants. As with April 19, there are many events happening across the country. This nationwide demonstration is happening Thursday May 1 through Saturday May 3, 2025 and is powered by the broadest coalition yet, including MoveOn, Indivisible, Women's March, the National Education Association, American Association of University Professors, and many more.
We're standing in solidarity with working people and raising our voices in support of public education, public services, a living wage, and fair treatment of immigrants. Events will take place over several days and times, to fit the schedules of working people. Find a protest or community-building event near you at https://maydaystrong.org/
There are a number of DC events. One on the National Mall begins at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 01, 2025 at 800 Madison Dr., NW, Washington, DC 20004 US. And others – protest or community-building events – near you can be found here: https://maydaystrong.org/
I will continue with our Rush Hour Resistance on the Fairlington I-395 bridge, which has been gaining people every week. There are other such overpass protests in the region and I am helping with efforts to coordinate our messaging and methods. Here’s another bridge event – May Day Overpass Protest Rt 28 | Indivisible NOVA West: Thursday, May 1, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm EDT.

On May 3, Congressman Don Beyer will be hosting another helpful event for Federal workers and contractors at George Washington Middle School from 12:00 – 3:00 pm with job search support for attendees such as resume writing. Over 50 companies that are looking to hire will be attending. Finally, we have the School Board caucus to choose the next Democratic candidate for the Arlington School Board. Online voting in the Democratic caucus opened April 19 and will run through May 10. In-person voting will be held Sunday, May 4 at Washington-Liberty High School and Saturday, May 10 at Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School. We have asked both candidates to answer a few questions and will share those answers on our website with a link in my next blog later this week.
As always, I hope this information is helpful and welcome suggestions.
Yours in peaceful resistance,
Libby
