May 2 Blog: School Board Caucus

Dear Friends:

It’s important to stay focused on our own local government. The Democratic School Board caucus voting has begun. There will be an election in the Fall, but it is most likely that the

winner of the caucus determines the winner in the Fall. You can vote online or in person. Online voting in the Democratic caucus will run through May 10. Voters have until Thursday, May 8, 2025 to request an electronic ballot. In-person voting will be held Sunday, May 4 at Washington-Liberty High School and Saturday, May 10 at Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School. I plan to vote in person. We’ve asked both candidates to answer a few questions, and they are posted for you to read on my Libby’s Local List website: https://www.libbyslocallist.com/.

I’ve decided not to recommend a candidate to my readers. I think both women – Monique “Moe” Bryant & June Prakash – running would be good and are committed to helping our schools. However, I had hoped to hear more from them about the need for accountability from our school leadership. In my years on the School Board, we focused a lot on measuring outcomes and holding ourselves accountable for results. I think that accountability work needs to be strengthened again. That said, I think both candidates bring good skills and commitment to the work. I thank them for running. It’s not easy to be a candidate and the job of a School Board member is more difficult than ever I think. I will do whatever I can to support the School Board in making APS as strong as it can be in these challenging times.

I hope this information is helpful to my readers and that everyone has found time to enjoy the lovely spring weather we’ve been having.

Best,

Libby
